Singing relies on close coordination between breathing, posture, the jaw, neck, rib cage and voice. If one of these areas feels tense or restricted, singing may require more effort. Voice symptoms do not always originate in the musculoskeletal system, however, so a careful assessment is important.

Robert Kuizenga is an osteopath with a professional background as a classical singer. His own experience of the physical and artistic demands of singing informs his work with both professional and amateur singers.

Assessing voice use and movement

During the first appointment, we discuss when your symptoms occur, how you use your voice and whether you have already had any examinations or treatment. Robert may then assess breathing, posture and movement in areas such as the jaw, neck, upper back and ribs. Rehearsal load, recovery, stress and sleep may also be discussed when relevant.

The aim is to understand which physical factors may be contributing and whether osteopathic care is appropriate. Osteopathy does not diagnose vocal-fold disorders and does not replace assessment by a GP, ENT specialist or speech and language therapist.

What may treatment involve?

When appropriate, treatment may include mobilisation and other manual techniques for areas such as the jaw, neck, rib cage and upper back. Robert may also suggest exercises or offer advice about movement, breathing, load and recovery. The approach depends on the individual singer and their symptoms, and improvement cannot be guaranteed.

Hoarseness or a clear change in the voice that has not improved within four weeks should be assessed by a GP or ENT specialist. Breathing difficulty, problems swallowing or other concerning symptoms require earlier medical advice.

Working with other voice professionals

Voice symptoms can have several causes and contributing factors. Amsterdam Osteo therefore works with ENT specialists, speech and language therapists and vocal coaches when appropriate. If another healthcare professional is better placed to help, we will discuss this during your appointment.
