Jaw pain and temporomandibular disorders (TMD)

The jaw joint is involved in chewing, speaking, swallowing and yawning. Problems affecting the jaw joint and chewing muscles are often grouped under the term temporomandibular disorders, or TMD. Symptoms may include pain around the jaw or ear, tired chewing muscles, stiffness or difficulty opening the mouth.

Clicking or popping in the jaw is common and does not always need treatment when there is no pain or restriction. Persistent pain, repeated locking or a clear change in mouth opening should be assessed by a dentist, GP or another appropriate healthcare professional.

What factors may play a part?

Jaw symptoms do not always have a single cause. Clenching or grinding, repeated strain, stress, sleep, a previous injury and symptoms from the neck or head can all affect how the jaw feels and moves.

Dental problems or a disorder of the jaw joint can cause similar symptoms. During a first appointment, we therefore look beyond the painful area and ask about how the problem started, how it has changed and when symptoms are most noticeable.

Assessment at Amsterdam Osteo

During a physical assessment, we may look at mouth opening, movement of the jaw joint, and the tension and function of the chewing muscles. We may also assess the neck, head and upper back when these areas appear relevant.

An osteopathic assessment does not replace a dental or medical diagnosis. If symptoms could be related to the teeth, inflammation, an accident or another issue requiring further investigation, we will advise you to contact a dentist, GP or specialist.

Treatment and advice

When osteopathic care appears suitable, treatment may include mobilisation and other manual techniques around the jaw, neck, head and upper back. We may also offer explanations, exercises or advice about movement, load and habits such as clenching or frequent gum chewing.

The approach differs from person to person and may form part of a wider treatment plan. When appropriate, we work alongside dentists, jaw physiotherapists and other healthcare professionals. We cannot guarantee a particular result or a fixed number of appointments.
