PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) is a common hormonal disorder affecting 8–13% of women. According to the WHO, up to 70% of women with PCOS are unaware they have the condition. Despite the name, it does not involve cysts, but rather immature follicles (eggs) that have not fully developed. PCOS is associated with a wide range of symptoms, which can be categorized into psychological, metabolic, and fertility-related issues. It may lead to an irregular menstrual cycle, elevated male hormones such as testosterone, excessive hair growth, and reduced fertility. Women with PCOS also have a higher risk of anxiety, depression, and a negative body image.

From a metabolic perspective, there is an increased risk of insulin resistance, pre-diabetes, and metabolic syndrome.
PCOS is caused by a combination of factors—genetics, insulin resistance, and low-grade inflammation all play a role. These factors contribute to an overproduction of male sex hormones, which disrupts hormonal balance and affects the menstrual cycle. Chronic stress and elevated insulin levels can worsen PCOS and its associated symptoms. Because PCOS does not have one single cause, treatment requires a broad, holistic approach.
Osteopathy is a valuable therapy for supporting patients with PCOS. It aims to influence underlying processes by reducing tension in the body and bringing the nervous system into balance. Osteopathy can also help alleviate functional complaints and support fertility. Tension in the abdominal and pelvic regions can impact the menstrual cycle and hormonal system. By restoring balance and improving blood flow, osteopathy can contribute to a healthier cycle and improved hormonal regulation.
