Bruxism: Understanding Teeth Grinding and Jaw Clenching

At Amsterdam Osteo Osteopathy, we specialize in the understanding and treatment of bruxism

Introduction

In the Netherlands, a significant portion of adults - between 5% and 16.5% - suffer from bruxism. This phenomenon, often identified as teeth grinding or jaw clenching, not only causes discomfort but can also lead to chronic muscle pain, problems with the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), tooth wear, and other related conditions. At Amsterdam Osteo Osteopathy, we are committed to a deep understanding and effective treatment of this condition.

What is Bruxism?

Bruxism presents itself in two ways:

  • Awake Bruxism: This involves unconsciously clenching the teeth while awake.

  • Sleep Bruxism: This includes unconsciously clenching or grinding teeth during sleep.

It's important to note that individuals with sleep bruxism may have an increased risk of other sleep disorders, such as snoring and sleep apnea.

Consequences of Bruxism

In severe cases, bruxism can lead to:

  • Wearing down of teeth

  • Breaking of molars

  • Pain in the jaw and head region

  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)

  • Additionally, stress and anxiety are often associated with bruxism.

Treatment Options

Recent research indicates that osteopathic techniques, applied to the jaw, neck, and skull area, can provide significant relief for jaw pain due to bruxism. A night guard or oral appliance, combined with these manual techniques, can also offer relief. For complaints resulting from inadequate oral habits, such as awake bruxism, the use of a reminder tool is an effective approach.
